Excellent Multimedia Design - Part 2

Image
In my latest post  Excellent Multimedia Design - Part 1  I reviewed Avoriaz's website and how they made used multimedia to enhance the site. Today, I will be discussing the United States Air Force's  E.C.H.O  website. E.C.H.O stands for Enhanced Cognitive Humann Ops.  Overview of Website This site is designed to be a bit of a 'training' module for those that are perhaps considering joining the Air Force or those who are just interested in testing their skills. As the site loads, the above page is displayed.  The number increases until it reaches 100. Once the site completes loading, the homepage appears. The background of the homepage fluctuates as you move your cursor over it.  The design is overall minimal, but it efficiently communicates their message.  Once you click the "Begin" button, you are taken to the page below. This image is a digital rendition of an Airman who will be your guide throughout the three challenges that are going to be pre...

Excellent Multimedia Design - Part 1

Today, I'm going to be discussing a couple of examples of excellent multimedia web design. The first website I'm going to be covering will be  Avoriaz . This is a website designed for a resort in France.  Overview of Website I love the fact that the whole experience is user selected. When you hover over the "Winter" or "Summer" titles, the picture zooms in and the text gets highlighted.  Once you select one of the options, you are taken to an amazing, beautiful 360-degree view of the resort that is consistent with the season you picked. You are able to click and drag to view the whole mountain side and valley below.  I chose to look at the "Overview of Residences". This takes you directly over top of the resort and you are then able to further access resources and more information about the amenities of the resort.  Multimedia Review This site makes very effective use of multimedia and creates an immersive, interactive experience for their users. ...

Photography - Pictures really are worth a thousand words. (Outline)

What is photography? -           According to Merriam-Webster is it “: the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (such as film or an optical sensor)” o    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/photography -           We use photography to capture still images of life around us. Photography in Multimedia -           Photography is a large part of multimedia. -           It is amazing what ideas, thoughts and emotions can be communicated through a photograph. -           We use photos for backgrounds. We use them to help clarify and display specific steps in directions. We use them to share a beautiful sunrise that we experienced. -     ...

Photography

Image
Photography is a beautiful tool that can be used to capture everything from gorgeous sunrises to a baby's first steps.  You can also use photography to tell a story, or give instructions, such as  How to Make a Gorgeous Maxi Dress from a T-Shirt Pattern  from It's Always Autumn. On her page, Autumn gives detailed instructions, along with helpful graphics and photos to teach you how to cut, sew and create a maxi dress from a t-shirt pattern. She guides you through each step of the process, including how to layout and cut out the pattern.  Photography is only one way that you could potentially tell a story. In fact, many would argue that photos often fall short when used to convey certain processes or emotions. Another way this tutorial could have been given is through the use of video. I, personally, find this to be the easiest way to understand a concept or method. Therefore, this technique would be best suited to someone who learns visually, while audio would...

Typography

Image
What is typography? It is simply the use of text or fonts. It can be used to draw attention to specific portions of your document.  In web design, typography can have a large impact on the usability and overall impression of your page.  As a general rule of thumb, you should use, at max, two fonts on your page. Any more than that can look unprofessional and incoherent.  You will also want to ensure that the font is easily readable, so that your users can understand your message.  Examples of Good and Bad Typography Bad Typography: Mr. Bottles Mr. Bottles Mr. Bottles is a website that can help identify antique bottles. However, their use of typography could be improved upon. The first thing that strikes me as odd, is the oversized "S". The gear in the bottom of the "S" rotates, and that is a cool affect, but the size of the "S" draws the user's eye to it, instead of the beginning of the word. Overall, the title is difficult to read, with the oddly shape...

Examples of Good Multimedia and Bad Multimedia

Image
Multimedia is used to emphasize the overall story that you are trying to communicate. It is very important to correctly harness the use of multimedia for your website's design. An example of a website that correctly and efficiently used multimedia is this site from  Humbolt County . Humbolt County's Visitors website They beautifully depict what a visit to Humbolt County could entail and what they have to offer. It is truly a well-done website and it makes the user (me) want to visit! An example of a website that I feel used multimedia poorly is this one from  Penny Juice . Penny Juice's Website This website is designed for one of the leading Juice companies for children and somehow doesn't really feel like it's family friendly. The poor placement of the background photograph leaves you feeling slightly creeped out. The teal header is fixed, so as you scroll down the page, it stays at the top. However, the other graphics on the page don't account for this header,...
